Mike Gorman alerted me to the programs at NSF on informal learning that might be of interests to some of us in the psych of science/tech world. See below excerpts from the program chair's email to me (Alphonse DeSena):
Greg,
Thanks for the note.
The Informal Science Education program (09-553) has 2 primary audiences: the general public and professionals engaged in informal science education (from researchers to exhibit designers, television producers, evaluators, etc.). Secondary audiences for us can be students and teachers in formal education as long as they are associated with an informal education activity. While our program has an interest in the motivations that contribute to the STEM pipeline and the development of STEM talent, our focus on those has an informal education spin, i.e. how informal learning experiences might contribute.
I also mentioned to Mike that ISE has a project type, called Communicating Research to Public Audiences (it’s in 09-553) for which the PI must have an active NSF research award. The purpose of these grants is to support the researcher’s interests in helping the public understand the research being conducted – and this can certainly be in the psychology of science/technology, in STS, etc.
Two other opportunities in our division are the REESE program (08-585), which focuses more broadly on research in education, and the DR-K12 program (09-602), which has an interest in interactions among formal and informal learning experiences.
Note that these solicitations are revised from time to time.
